If You Need Advice About Your Own Situation

Please read this part first, because it will save you time.

Worker Wisdom publishes general information about employment law. We can’t give you legal advice about your specific circumstances, review your documents, tell you whether you have a case, or represent you. Sending a message through this site doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship, and messages sent here aren’t privileged or confidential.

Here’s where to actually go:

To find an employment lawyer who represents workers. The National Employment Lawyers Association keeps a Find-A-Lawyer directory of attorneys who represent employees rather than employers, which is the distinction that matters most. Many take cases on contingency, meaning you pay nothing unless you win. Your state or county bar association also runs a referral service — the ABA maintains a directory of bar lawyer finders covering every state.

For unpaid wages. You can file a wage claim with your state labor agency at no cost and without a lawyer. The Department of Labor maintains a directory of state labor offices.

For discrimination or harassment. The EEOC and your state civil rights agency both take complaints directly, and there’s no filing fee. The deadlines are short — as little as 180 days in some states — so this is one to start on rather than research.

One thing worth knowing. Most employment claims have deadlines measured in months, not years. If something happened to you recently, talk to someone soon even if you’re still deciding what to do.

Please Don’t Send Confidential Information

Whatever you write in the form below isn’t privileged. Don’t include details you’d want protected, and don’t send documents. If you need to discuss your situation in confidence, that conversation belongs with a lawyer you’ve retained.

What We’re Glad to Hear About

Suggestions. If there’s a question you couldn’t find an answer to anywhere, that’s useful to know. A lot of what gets written here started as somebody’s unanswered question.

Corrections. If something on this site is wrong, out of date, or unclear, tell us. Employment law changes constantly and we’d rather fix an article than leave it wrong. Include the page and what’s off.

Reprints and permissions. For republishing an article, quoting at length, or linking in a way that needs approval.

Press and speaking. Media inquiries, interviews, and speaking requests.
